George -

Early in November, before either party had chosen their candidate, I communicated with both of the 25th District party chairs, Will Harvey and Keith Drake, asking them to have the candidates reserve the Dec. 4th date for the debate/audience participation event.

The radio station [WINA] was in charge of doing the letters to the final candidates, which they did on the 20th of Nov. We had to wait until 5:00 pm on the 19th to make sure that no independent or other party candidates surfaced. I am not sure of how the follow up was handled, but confirmation was received from the Deeds camp, and finally, the Maddux camp indicated that the candidate was unavailable, without much other explanation.

We have tried to reschedule under the same format, but have finally given up.

Say That Again

Our office spoke with the News Department at WINA at about 4:15 pm Wednesday, November 28th. They said that they had not heard anything about a rumor that Jane Maddux would unavailable to debate Creigh Deeds on the 4th.

Jan Thomas said he had spoken with the campaigns on Monday evening, and that as far as he knew the debate was on track for Tuesday, December 4 from 7 to 9 pm.

We then spoke, at 4:20 pm, with Dave Rexrode, campaign manager for Jane Maddux. He said that "we had never agreed to it [the debate]. And we have
something else scheduled -- an event that we cannot get out of."

Later, we received the following note from Frances Schutz, office manager at the League of Women Voters:

"After many calls, the best I am able to do comes from WINA's Program Mgr.: Due to scheduling problems, the debate that was to have taken place 12/4 at 7 pm will be rescheduled" (Frances Schutz, electronic mail, November 29, 2001).

Still later, Sarah Young at WINA reported that both candidates have verbally agreed to participate in the debate between 7 and 9 pm on December 13th at PVCC but that she has not gotten written confirmation from Maddux (Sue Lewis, electronic mail, November 30, 2001).

NOT (see below)

Now, both Senate candidates for the special election for the 25th Senate District have officially agreed to participate in a live, on-air 'debate' on AM 1070 WINA. It will take place on December 12th from 9:06 - 10:00 a.m. on "Charlottesville Live."

Although WINA won't be accepting calls during this particular show, WINA will format the debate by using many of the insightful questions people have been submitting to us.

They are still accepting questions for the debate [e-mailed to WINA at sarah@wina.com] and look forward to getting the candidates' messages out to our community. Be sure to tune in at 9:06 a.m.!
