Dear George, Maddy May (my labrador retriever), and I, are enjoying the wonderful variety of 'sportsmen and sportswomen' that are appearing in support of Mark Warner. Ahh, it is a big tent after all. Despite the danger of upsetting the enjoyable pattern of parody that has preceded us, we decided that an actual gun owning hunter would be in order. So, we proudly sit and stand in support of Mark, and with a Remington 8-70 no less. Too often in life we over simplify people and situations, and we are all the lesser for it. This happens to all of us, and hunters are hardly an exception. Some assume that those who own guns are members of the NRA and are opposed to gun control. I am neither. Just ask the guy from the NRA who called me on the phone and had to listen to my interpretation of the 2nd Amendment. We have gun control now, and I think we could use more of it. It's all just a matter if degree. I support Mark Warner, Tim Kaine, and Don McEachin for a number of reasons. Education, employment, and social justice to name a few. The environment is a no brainer when you compare the two campaigns. I think we as a community of people would benefit if we embraced a particular perspective of native peoples. I would like to see us openly talk about our decisions in the context of how they will effect the seventh generation to follow us. The short sightedness of contemporary decision making is an insult to our children and the generations that follow. This campaign should strive to speak to all Virginians, believing that within us all there is a place that will respond to a call to the greater good. No votes should be assumed won, or lost, based upon ethnicity, geography, education level, wealth, etc... We do a great disservice when we assume we know the views of any of our brothers and sisters. None of us are one dimensional. If this campaign takes it's message to the people respecting their integrity, intelligence, and innate goodness, the commonwealth will be the better for it. So much for my little speech. If anyone would like to discuss my philosophy towards hunting, the fallacy of the dualistic perspective of humans AND nature, or anything else, please do. You can reach me at dsaunier@cstone.net and/or 293-2103. Peace, David Saunier (electronic mail, July 2, 2001).
