On Thursday, November 8th, there will be a 25th Senate District Democratic Candidates' Forum, 7-9 pm, at the Buford School Auditorium.

The forum will consist of two parts. During the first half, the candidates will address questions submitted to them in advance by the Charlottesville and Albemarle Democratic Committees' membership. In the second half, candidates will answer questions from the audience.

Directions to Buford Middle School in Charlottesville: From I-64, exit north onto 5th Street. Go about 1.5 miles, then turn left at the traffic light onto Cherry Avenue. The entrance to Buford Middle School is on the left, about 100 yards past the next traffic light at Ninth Street.

Announced candidates for the Democratic nomination include Nancy O'Brien, Meredith Richards, Al Weed and Creigh Deeds.

Format and Schedule for Candidate's Forum

The forum will start promptly at 7:00pm. Doors open at 6:30 and I would encourage you to get a seat by no later than 6:55 so that the candidates can make full use of the two hours that we have.

7:00 - Will Harvey, 25th District Chair, will give a short introduction.

7:01 - Connie Jorgensen, Moderator, will explain the rules for the forum.

7:02 - Connie will introduce the candidates. Each will get 3 minutes for an introductory statement.

7:20 - Connie will present 3 pre-prepared questions. Each candidate will have 2 minutes to answer each question. The questions are:

1) What are your highest priorities with respect to education? What do you think the legislature can and should do to advance these priorities?

2) How do we protect our natural resources and rural heritage while allowing for economic growth? Do localities need more tools from the State to help them to shape the type of growth that they want?

3) Both Mark Warner and Tim Kaine spoke during their campaigns on the need for tax restructuring. Once you've cleaned up the budget mess that the Republicans have left you, how do you think this should best be
accomplished? Are there changes that you would make to how the State and localities raise revenue to pay for essential services?

While the candidates are answering these questions, index cards will be distributed so that audience members can write down additional questions. We will start collecting these near the end of the first question session and will continue to collect them throughout the evening.

7:50 - Candidates will respond to questions from the audience. Connie will select those that are most representative. Questions should be addressed to all candidates. In the event that a question is addressed
to one or more specific candidates, all candidates will be given an opportunity to answer. During this time, audience members can submit additional questions. Each candidate will be given 2 minutes to answer
each question. We should be able to get through at least 6 or 7 audience questions - more if the candidates keep their answers succinct.

8:50 - Each candidate will have 2 minutes for a closing statement

9:00 - The forum will be over. We have the lobby until 9:30, so if candidates are willing, there may be some opportunity for informal discussion after the forum.

Note - ALL of the questions received so far have been forwarded to all of the candidates and it is my hope that they will be able to respond to some of these via the Loper website, email lists, etc. There is also a
very good chance that any of the questions submitted will come up during the forum. I will keep a list of all questions that are submitted during the forum and send this list to the candidates, so that even if your
question doesn't get answered at the forum, all of the candidates will see all of the questions and will have a chance to respond at some later date.

See you Thursday night!

Best regards -

Kevin Lynch (electronic mail, November 7, 2001).
