George,

As I sit reading Larry Sabato's analysis of the 2001 state elections ["2001 Gubernatorial Election in Virginia: The Return of Two-Party Competition"], I am struck by a few of his thoughts, especially around the Republican rise to 64 seats in the House.

He says, "Under Speaker Vance Wilkins, the Republicans had long focused on intense, supportive recruitment of strong candidates. By contrast, Democrats had let their "feeder system" atrophy, leaving many younger Democrats around the state disillusioned and unenthused about seeking office."

As one of the strongest party locals in the state, what are we doing about this? Not just here in Cville, but on a state level. I invite a serious discussion of our state party strategy.

Ben Thacker-Gwaltney (electronic mail, March 5, 2002)
