This conference, sponsored by the Center for Governmental Studies and The Hotline, has traditionally brought together some of our nation's best thinkers to analyze the health of our political process. This year's event looks to be no exception, with Andrea Mitchell, Bob Schieffer, and Elizabeth Drew heading up a distinguished list of panelists. Emily Couric, D-Charlottesville, plans to co-host public hearings throughout the 25th Senate District prior to the Jan. 10 convening of the General Assembly. She said five other state legislators will join her for various hearings Tuesday through Dec. 18. Tuesdays hearing for Charlottesville and Albemarle County will include Delegates Paul C. Harris, R-Albemarle, and Mitchell Van Yahres, D- Charlottesville. It will be at 7 p.m. in the Albemarle County Office Building Auditorium. Tuesday, December 5, 7 p.m.: TheYoung Feminist Scholar Program of the University of Virginia's Women's Center will feature Negar Mahmoodzadegan speaking on "Sisters of Survival: Understanding the Impact of Incarcerated Women's Childhood Abuse Histories on their Adjustment to Prison" at Newcomb Hall 389.
Negar Mahmoodzadegan is a Doctoral Candidate in the Clinical Psychology Program of the Curry School of Education. She will draw material from her dissertation research and from her yearlong internship as a mental health therapist at the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women. Ms. Mahmoodzadegan's work combines feminist theory and psychological research in order to create a framework for understanding how incarcerated women with significant abuse histories relate to themselves and to others. Wednesday, December 6: Building on a 'tradition' started in April 1999, a coalition of local anti-DP faith groups and citizen organizations will hold a public vigil outside the Charlottesville City Circuit Court (320 E. High St.), at noon on Wednesday Dec. 6th. The vigil will protest the execution later that evening of Christopher Goins. At 12:30 p.m., we will break tradition and move to a (rapid) teach-in on all the latest developments. We hope the teach-in can be held at the Village School, 215 E. High St. Bring brown-bag lunches if you want. We will have handouts available on many aspects of the current situation, talking points for contacts with legislators, etc.. Inform yourself! Join our network! At the teach-in, we also hope to start planning follow-on activities for early January. Finally, friends, the momentum is with us--at least for a while. Patterson, Jr., serving on the White House staff for 14 years will speak at The Miller Center of Public Affairs. His topic will be "The New White House Staff and Cabinet: Will Changes be Made? Lessons Learned?' A book signing of his most recent book The White House Staff: Inside the West Wing and Beyond will follow the forum. Thursday, December 14, 7 p.m.: The Charlottesville Democratic Committee will meet at Mount Zion Church to elect officers and to fill vacant precinct committee seats. I do not know whether vacant precinct committee member seats will be filled first or whether officers will be elected and then vacant seats will be filled. Individuals for vacant precinct positions are nominated within their precincts and then confirmed by the committee as a whole. "It is the intention of the nominating committee to release its report sometime next week so that committee members will have the necessary information prior to the meeting on December [14]th. The party bylaws, in article v - sect. 5.01., require the election of a chair, 3 vice chairs, a secretary and treasurer. Abbitt, D-Appomattox, will seek public input at the Nelson County Administration Building at 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 20, 11:00 a.m.: Washington Post journalist Helen Dewar will speak at the Miller Center. Her topic will be "The Other elections: The Senate and the 107th Congress." Friday, December 29: The League of Women Voters of Charlottesville/Albemarle County is hosting its annual "Legislative Luncheon" at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, January 3, 2001, at the Boar's Head Ballroom. State Senator Emily Couric, Delegate Paul Harris, and Delegate Mitch Van Yahres will be on hand to give a preview of the upcoming legislative session and to answer questions. The League hosts this annual event in an effort to give the public an opportunity to talk directly to state legislators and to learn what issues will be on the 2001 legislative agenda. All members of the community are invited. Cost of the luncheon, prepared by Boar's Head, is $20 non-members, $15 members.
