Lonnie Weeks, Jr., is the next individual scheduled to die on Death Row in Virginia on Thursday, March 16, 2000.

Vigils are routinely held at 8:45 p.m. on the day of executions at the Friends Meeting house (1108 Forest Street [a block east of Rose Hill Drive, right by Murray High School]) in Charlottesville, Virginia.

On Saturday, April 29, 2000 the Charlottesville Friends Meeting will hold the third in a series of Listening Projects. They will train in the morning at the Meetinghouse and then go out in pairs into the community for three hours or so in the afternoon, knocking
on doors and asking people to tell them what they think of the death penalty and why.

The Listening Project begins at 9 a.m. with coffee and doughnuts with a brown bag lunch. It runs until 4 p.m. or so.

According to Chip Tucker, they have developed a pretty good, designedly neutral & contemplative questionnaire. Anybody can do this listening, he says, though it does take some orientation and one gets better with practice.

For more information about Vigils or other related Quaker activities, you may call Chip Tucker at 924-6677 or reach him by electronic mail at tucker@virginia.edu or e-mail the Charlottesville Friends Meeting at quakers@avenue.org

If you wish to keep abreast of executions, you can log on to Virginians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty or to Death Penalty News and Updates.
