George,

As a nation we owe a huge debt to Martin Luther King. He led us, black and white, from the evil days of segregation into a new era of hope and freedom. Because of him we have avoided the ethnic warfare so endemic around the world. His use of nonviolence and Christian love showed us the way to overcome evil with good. He certainly deserves to be honored. The suggestion of a statue appeals to me.

Steve Koleszar (electronic mail, September 9, 2000).
