Hi George, I would like to consider how the theory of affirmative action has evolved (into diversity) and how it has been interpreted (the quota theory first espoused by the EEOC). Equality of opportunity around Charlottesville has not been the result (do another "Muddy Floor" report on UVa, and the City of Charlottesville to see). I still favor statistics over feelings at this point because statistics were the original target of change - not feelings. That focus has not changed; statistics are simply an examination of progress and they carry no authority. The question we all have to answer around Charlottesville, and soon, is what form education into action should take. UVa Academia has thus far failed as far as many statistics go; yet they have taught us with great success many other things. It might be fair or even prudent for them to propose other theories when teaching class than knocking the head off of someone who has what you want to share. We should be glad about that, or be getting ready to fight. As a City, we still seem to favor the "do what I say or get your butt whipped" theory. We seem to relish the maddeningly slow progress in race relations we are making internally, as a Nation, as a form of continuing dominance and victory that is vital to maintenance. The statistics offer no compromise. Our desire to change them has been planted already. The seeds have borne bitter fruit. I am not a terrorist; but I still say, you better stay ready to kick butt around here. George King (electronic mail, December 4, 2002)
