Tuesday, January 1: New Year's Day. Thursday, January 3: The League of Women Voters of Charlottesville/Albemarle will be holding its annual Legislative Luncheon at 12:00 noon at the Boar's Head Inn Ballroom. Invitations have been extended to: Rob Bell (Delegate, 58th district) This is a chance for the public to meet the legislative delegation, hear each member preview the upcoming General Assembly, share issues and positions, and to ask questions of the legislators. The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan, issues-oriented organization dedicated to citizen involvement in our democratic and electoral process. Saturday, January 5: Delegate Mitch Van Yahres (D-Charlottesville) and Senator-elect Creigh Deeds (D-Warm Springs) will hold a pre-session public forum for residents of the 57th District on Saturday, January 5, 2002 at 9:00 a.m. in the McIntire Room of the Downtown Library. The purpose of this forum is to give constituents an opportunity to engage in a discussion with their representatives prior to the 2002 General Assembly session. For starts, you might ask each of them where they stand on the moratorium?
You might also want to ask Creigh Deeds and Mitch Van Yahres to clarify their postions on the decriminalization of sodomy... Monday, January 7: Citizens for Jefferson School, an organization formed by Alexandria Searls and Nancy O'Brien to serve as a liaison between public and city officials, will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library on Market Street. Individuals who are interested in the school, on which the city's School Board and council are expected to make decisions this month, are invited to attend (Kate Andrews, The Daily Progress, January 6, 2001). Tuesday, January 8: "The nominees are set for a special election for the 12th District House of Delegates seat, to be held Jan. 8. The seat has been vacant since Del. R. Creigh Deeds (D-Bath) won election to the state Senate last week to replace Democrat Emily Couric in the 25th Senate District. Couric died of cancer in October. Del. James M. Shuler (D-Montgomery), a retired veterinanian will face Blacksburg auctioneer Larry Linkous, former chairman of the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors and former chairman of the Montgomery GOP Committee. Linkous was chosen Saturday at a Republican caucus. The 12th District includes Alleghany, Bath and Craig counties, part of Giles and Montgomery counties and Covington. Shuler had represented the district for eight years until General Assembly Republicans redrew boundary lines this year to put him in the same district as Deeds. Shuler moved to Pulaski County and lost the November election to Republican David Nutter in the reconfigured 7th District. Shuler has since moved back to Blacksburg. Wednesday, January 9: The Virginia General Assembly Reconvenes. Wednesday, January 9: The Virginia Piedmont Technology Council Legislative Committee is pleased to announce that Warner Transition Chair, L.F. Payne will be our guest at January's Legislative Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. at the Omni Hotel. His topic will be: The Shape of Virginia's New Administration. This discussion will focus on the new administration of Governor Elect Warner and its approach to governance, offer insights as to how this administration will affect business and technology in Virginia, and provide an opportunity for you to offer advice on issues important to you. Former Congressman L.F. Payne acted as Campaign Chair for Warner 2001 and was recently appointed to serve as Transition Chair of Governor-Elect Mark Warner's Transition Leadership Team. A graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia, Payne represented Virginia's 5th Congressional District from 1988-1998. He currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of McGuire Woods Consulting. The cost is $15.00 for VPTC members and $20.00 for nonmembers. A hot buffet-style breakfast will be served. Wednesday, January 9: Democrats for Change will be having their next platform-building meeting from 7:00-8:45 pm in the McIntire Room of the main library in downtown Charlottesville. Further platform meetings will be held on Tuesday, January 15 (7:00, McIntire Room) and [if necessary] Wednesday, January 23 (7:00, McIntire Room). "One of those rare children's concerts where the grownups clearly had as much fun as their toddlers" The Boston Herald Saturday, January 12: FOCUS Women's Resource Center's Black Women/White Women Discussion Group is sponsoring the sixth annual Days of Dialogue on Saturday January 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Downtown branch of the Jefferson Madison Regional Library in Charlottesville, Virginia. The event is free and open to the public. The morning session will consist of a panel discussion entitled 'Building Community: How can we value differences across race and ethnicity?' Women from a range of ethnic backgrounds including African, Asian, Native-American, Hispanic, European and Middle Eastern will discuss the challenges they faced in the mainstream culture and share their vision of a society which values and celebrates all cultures. Afternoon workshops will begin at 12:45 after a brown bag lunch. We invite the community to join us in this open dialogue. Monday, January 14: To assist candidates who will run on the Democrats for Change platform and work to implement it when in office, the Democrats for Change are holding a CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATE ORIENTATION SESSION for any first-time candidates who might be considering a run. Former City Council candidates (both successful and unsuccessful) will be on hand to talk about their experiences and to answer any questions you might have about putting together a winning campaign. Tuesday, January 15: Financial Filing Deadline for candidates for the Charlottesville City Council who received support between July 1, 2001 and December 31, 2001. Tuesday, January 15: The Joint Public Hearing for the Charlottesville City Council and the Charlottesville Planning Commission will be held at 7:30 p.m.: a meeting which requires the attendance of all city council members and planning commission members. Wednesday, January 16: The monthly meeting of the Piedmont Group of the Sierra Club will be held on at 7:30 p.m. at the St. Marks Lutheran Church at the corner of Alderman and Ivy Roads in Charlottesville. The speaker will beBill Henry of Blue Ridge Mountain Sports. He will talk about winterhiking - where (or is it wear?), what, how, and of course why??? Brrr.... Saturday, January 19: The next Albemarle/Charlottesville Democratic Breakfast will be held at 9:30 a.m. at Jefferson Area Board for the Aging. Candidates interested in receiving the Democratic nomination for the Charlottesville City Council in 2002 have been invited to participate in a Forum. Publically announced candidates who have agreed to participate include Joan Fenton and Blake Caravati and Bern Ewert and David Simmons and Waldo Jaquith. Alexandria Searls, who will be away at the time of the breakfast, has said she will formally announce her candidacy the week of the 21st. Sunday, January 20: A Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration will begin at 6 p.m. at the Charlottesville Performing Arts Center at Charlottesville High School. "This year's program, titled 'Martin Luther King Jr: A Celebration Through the Arts,' will demonstrate how King's legacy has inspired artisitc expression ... The program includes the Charlottesville Orchestra Quartet, the Albemarle High School Jazz Band, dance and drama students from Charlottesville High School, the Charlottesville High School steppers and rappers from the Music Resource Center. Singers from all four area public high schools will perform along with a community choir of children between the ages of 8 and 12 (Eric Swensen, The Daily Progress, January 7, 2002). This forum will focus on issues of social equity (e.g. crime, wages, race relations), affordable housing and economic development. Confirmed co-sponsors are: Democrats for Change, Labor Action Group, Public Housing Association of Residents, TradeLocal, and Friends of Equitable & Affordable Housing. The moderator will be Susan Fraiman of the Labor Action Group.
