Thursday, July 18 - Friday July 19th :The University of Virginia Center for Politics will host the Commonwealths top journalists, political analysts, and current and former members of Virginia state government during the Gerald L. Baliles Governors Conference on Thursday, July 18 and Friday, July 19 at the Boars Head Inn in Charlottesville. Sponsored each year by the University of Virginia Center for Politics and the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service, the Governors Conference reviews the administration of one of Virginias modern governors in a non-partisan manner to determine how each has helped shape todays Commonwealth. Following the success of conferences on Mills E. Godwin, A. Linwood Holton, John N. Dalton, and Charles S. Robb, the fifth annual Governors Conference will explore the lessons, legacy, and historical significance of Governor Baliles gubernatorial administration (1986-1990). Governor Baliles sought to make Virginia more competitive in the international marketplace. He was a Richmond attorney who also served in the House of Delegates and as Attorney General (1982-1985). During his tenure, the state increased revenue collections dedicated to transportation. He also expanded the state prison system and appointed the first woman to the Virginia Supreme Court. A full schedule of panel discussions held at the Boars Head Inn on both days will be highlighted by a dinner on Thursday evening. The evening will include remarks by Center for Politics director Larry Sabato and a keynote address by Gerald L. Baliles. Scheduled participants include United States Senator John W. Warner, former Governor Linwood Holton, and numerous current and former legislators, including Al Smith, Joan Jones, William Wampler, Hunter Andrews, Richard Cranwell, Vince Callahan, Joe Gartlan, Pete Giesen, Janet Howell, and Bob Bloxom. The panels are free and open to the public. Members of the media interested in covering any portion of the event should contact Joshua Scott at the Center for Politics at (434) 243-3540. Saturday, July 20: The Albemarle/Charlottesville Democratic Breakfast will be held at 9:30 a.m. at Jefferson Area Board for the Aging on Hillsdale Drive. Sunday, July 21: Region Ten's Softball IX Extravaganza at McIntire Park, Field #1: Admission to both Softball games is FREE. Media Game: start time 1:00 p.m. This is the ninth annual battle between US and Them, and although the tally to date is four games each, the Elephants won the last two games. It is time to show what we as DEMOCRATS stand for-to stand up proudly, be counted, play ball, cheer on the team, show Virgil we're not afraid! All proceeds from home run, inning, and T-shirt sponsors and T-shirt sales and concession sales go directly to Region Ten's Meadowcreek Center Day Programs for adults with disabilities. New this year: HOME RUN DERBY for interested players on each of the 4 teams. Entry fee for each competitor in the derby is $10.00. Men and women are welcome to compete; women will hit from 2nd base. The derby will be conducted before and after each game. Contact Gary Campbell @ (434) 961-5592 or gary.campbell@lexis-nexis.com to register to compete or sponsor a hitter. All proceeds benefit Region Ten's Meadowcreek Center. 2002 is a tie breaker year for the main event, the Democrats vs. Republicans game. Each team has won 4 games in the past 8 years so Region Ten's Softball IX Extravaganza will feature fun and excitement as the game is decided. As in previous years, local, statewide and national politicians/law-makers have been invited to play in this contest which showcases the friendly spirit of competition that these players experience on the field and off the field. ![]() You may recall that in the Softball VIII Extravaganza now Governor Mark Warner threw out the first pitch and Mrs. Cynthia Earley and a couple of her children led the Pledge of Allegiance. The national anthem and a color guard are part of the pre-game activities each year as well as the Pledge of Allegiance. This is a family event. Dateline: 2002, May 2, Mitch Van Yahres at the dedication of a historical highway marker at Region Ten's 800 Preston Avenue location was quoted as saying that maybe junior democrats should play this year in order to beat the well oiled Republican machine. Is this true? Also new this year, the media team has grown so large that by their request they are splitting into two teams and playing each other. The plan is that the print press will challenge the television people along with radio personalities on each team. The game promises to be quite lively, a good-hearted rivalry. Game Day officials include Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Ronald M. Huber as Rules Chair and Official Scorekeeper; John R. Zug, Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney as Umpire and Judge Robert Downer as Umpire. Bob Gibson, senior writer of The Daily Progress, Maurice Jones of the City of Charlottesville and Wayne Mogielnicki of Monticello will be the game day announcers. The party is around back, by the parking lot in an empty apartment with a garage-style door on it. The band includes Jake (on guitar), Austin Graham (on keyboard), Ben Schwartz (on drums), and James Graham (on bass). Show up around 11 p.m. to hear Jake's swan song.
Elizabeth Nelson will be taking Jake's news beat in Charlottesville. ![]()
