The Aviator by Gutzon Borglum (1919), Clemons Library, The University of Virginia

As many times as I have walked past Clemons Library, it never occured to me clothe The Aviator. Nor had I thought to look up beyond The Aviator to the top of Alderman Library.

The Aviator on September 20, 2002

Walking past The Aviator on Friday, September 20th, however, I could not help but notice a dozen or so nicely dressed young men, all dressed in blue blazers, surrounding the statue.

Not wishing to intrude on their activities, I sought to capture a picture of the statue alone. It was then that I noticed the icon atop Alderman Library.

Anyone have any notion about the utilitarian purpose of the icon?

Anyone have any notion of what message someone might have been intending to send by clothing the statue?
