Friday, August 1: L. Gordon Flake will speak at the Miller Center at 11:00 am. His topic is The Crisis in Korea: The Nuclear Issue and U.S. Policy towards North Korea.

Saturday, August 2: You are invited to a Houseparty/Fundraiser on Saturday August 2, 2003 from 3 pm - 6pm at 1940 Stillhouse Road: Hosted by Tom and Barbara Kester/RSVP 245-9167

Suggested Contributions $25,$50,$75,or $100. They would like to raise at least $5,000. Bring your check to the party (DeanforAmerica Campaign)

Directions: Barracks/Garth Rd, right on Barracks Farm Road, right on Ivy Farms Dr., 3rd right on Stillhouse, on right. Be sure to RSVP so the correct amount of food will be ordered.

The Houseparty for Dean Houseparty for Dean on Saturday raised over $2,000 for the Dean Campaign with fifty or so visitors in attendance.

The food was catered by the Blue Ridge Cafe and the live music was provided by the Patrick Olwell Trio. Meredith Richards and Al Weed were in attendance speaking for Dean.

Tuesday, August 5: DEMOCRATIC PRES. CANDIDATE NATIONAL FORUM

On Tuesday, Aug. 5, candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination will voice their views on working family issues at a nationally broadcast Working Families Presidential Forum in Chicago sponsored by the AFL-CIO.

** Gather up friends, family and co-workers and watch the forum LIVE on C-SPAN beginning at 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Aug. 5. **

Find out where the candidates stand on the most important issues to working families, including overtime pay, jobs and wages, health care, retirement security, corporate accountability and the freedom of
workers to choose to form a union free from employer intimidation.

Wednesday, August 6: HIROSHIMA DAY COMMEMORATIVE PROCESSION AND VIGIL

"On August 6, people in Japan observe the Hiroshima Peace Festival (or Hiroshima Day), a day of reflection commemorating the dropping of the first atomic bomb ever on a populated area on this date in 1945 in which almost 130,000 people were killed, injured, or missing, and 90 percent of the city was leveled" (The Observer, August 6, 2003).

Wednesday, August 6: Dean Meetup (Wednesday, August 6) at 7 PM at Gordon Avenue Library.

They will be writing letters to New Hampshire voters encouraging them to support Dean. Also, for those who have petitions ready to be notarized, a notary will be present. Anyone interested in petitioning can get them at the meeting.

They have a goal of 2,000 signatures from the 5th District by the end of August.If you have not signed up for the August 6 Dean Meetup - go to www.meetup.com and sign up - vote for Gordon Avenue Library at 7 p.m.

Wednesday, August 13: Senior Statesmen of Virginia Regional General Assembly Candidates Showcase: rom 1:30 to 3 pm at the Senior Center in Charlottesville, Virginia - former chair of Albemarle Board of Supervisors Charlotte Humphris moderating.

Candidates include Independent Delegate Watkins Abbitt and his Democratic challenger Allen Hale; Republican Delegate Rob Bell (unopposed); Republican Delegate Steve Landes (unopposed); Democratic Delegate Mitch Van Yahres (unopposed); Democratic Senator Creigh Deeds (unopposed); Republican Senator Emmett Hanger and his Democratic challenger Steve Sisson.

Wednesday, August 13: "MUSIC FOR PEACE" BENEFIT CONCERT FOR CCPJ

Wednesday, August 13, 8 PM at The Twisted Branch Tea House. Performers include Corey Harris, David Sickmen of The Hackensaw Boys, Peter Greisar, Erika Olsen, Matthew Wilner & Andy Waldeck of Earth to Andy. There will be a donation requested at the door. All proceeds to benefit CCPJ.

Friday, August 15: Michael E. Toner will speak at the Miller Center at 11:00 am. His topic is The Presidential Public Financing System: A Troubled System and Options for Reform.

Friday, August 15: Charlottesville, VA – On Friday, August 15 at 12:30 p.m. Delegate Mitch Van Yahres will hold a press conference to launch the "Democratic Road Back" PAC. This political action committee is designed to support Democrats running for offices that represent the City of Charlottesville or Albemarle County. These offices include two state Senate seats, four House of Delegates seats, five City Council seats, six Board of Supervisors seats, and City and County Constitutional officers.

The press conference will be held on the Downtown Mall in front of Delegate Van Yahres' office at 223 W. Main St. The public and media are encouraged to attend.

Saturday, August 16: Before Senator John F. Kerry travels to Roanoke [see below] for dinner on Saturday, August 16th, he will be in Charlottesville. The occasion is an event to benefit Sen. Creigh Deeds' Rough Mountain Leadership PAC. Invitations have not yet gone out, but here are the particulars: Summer luncheon, 12:30-2:00, Saturday, August 16th, Charlottesville Ice Park: Tickets $50 each (also patron and sponsor categories).

Please remember that the Rough Mountain Leadership PAC will receive ALL of the proceeds, to be used to further the candidacies of Virginia Democrats. Thanks! Saturday, August 23:Cory Caouette, a resident of Albemarle and a lifelong Democrat, will be hosting a "house party for Howard Dean" at Darden Towe Park on August 23rd.

She says, while clearly this invitation supports an individual candidate, it is my opinion that getting together, regardless of support in the primaries, is a wonderful opportunity for your members to discuss issues with fellow Charlottesville-Albemarle democrats.
