Events include tours of the Jae Ko show by the artist herself (1-2 pm), a rare musical presentation by Charlottesville Gamelan, 2-3pm (Indonesian music that includes xylophones, gongs and drums), two hands-on workshops (crepe paper sculptures and Asian brush painting, times ongoing, 1-4pm), and snacks courtesy Integral Yoga. Saturday, June 7: Living Wage Rally set for Saturday, June 7 at 3:45 p.m. at the Rotunda. The Virginia Organizing Project is coordinating a Living Wage Rally in support of the University of Virginia students who are trying to get UVa to require that all companies doing business with the University pay their workers a living wage. Tuesday, June 10: Bob Gibson is hosting Tuesday's Evening Edition live call-in program on primary night, June 10, with guests U.S. Sen. George Allen, R-Fairfax County, and Bill Wood, executive director of the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership at the University of Virginia. The show airs Tuesday from 7:30-8:30 p.m. on WVTF (88.5 FM in Charlottesville), the public radio station from Roanoke to Charlottesville, and will feature discussion about the direction of the Republican Party as well as issues raised by callers. Baker, author with Michael Reisman of Regulating Covert Action, speaks at the Miller Center at 11 a.m. His topic will be "The National Security Presidency in a Time of Terror: An NSC [National Security Council] Lawyer Reflects on the Last Ten Years." Tom Olivier will speak about his ideas for "An integrated conservation plan for Albemarle County -- and why growth means we need it soon." This will be followed by a questions/comments session initiated by a panel of discussants (Tim Beatley, Ed Imhoff, and Joe Jones). A biologist and software developer with a Ph.D. in anthropology, Tom has worked in Africa, Australia, and England. He has been president of Citizens for Albemarle and a member of the Thomas Jefferson Sustainability Council, and now serves on the County's Biodiversity Work Group. Since the late 1980's Tom and his wife have operated a commercial sheep farm in Albemarle County. Tom explains that his thinking about a conservation plan has been prompted in part by the efforts of Pima County, Arizona in development of the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan. A copy of a short article on the plan by Chuck Huckleberry, the executive of Pima County, is attached above. Also of interest is the recent Defenders of Wildlife Report "Integrating Land Use Planning and Biodiversity". This can be downloaded at http://www.biodiversitypartners.org/Pubs/landuse/001.html. The report is based on a conference held in 2002 which Tom attended, and includes some discussion of the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan and a page on biodiversity protection efforts here in Albemarle County. It will feature Nick Evans, Thomas Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District Director, and is open to the public. Nick will talk about the Thomas Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District, the notion of water as "commons," and why Charlottesville and Albemarle should come together in making public policy. Wednesday, June 25: The League of Women Voters of Charlottesville-Albemarle will hold its annual Theater Night fundraiser on Wednesday, June 25th, at 5:30 p.m., at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Unitarian Church on Rugby Road (at Edgewood Lane/Fendall Avenue).
