Festivities will include a Puppet Parade linking three major shopping malls, a Barter Faire and a "Carnival Against Consumerism" puppet show. Buy Nothing Day is a holiday celebrated in over 30 countries around the world. It celebrates the joys and satisfaction of simple, peaceful, sustainable and equitable living. Buy Nothing Day festivities encourage people to consider the consequences of a lifestyle of consumption on local economies (destroying local businesses, foreclosures and increased debt), landscape (shopping malls, mega-stores, parking lots and gridlock) and community (alienation, frustration). In a world where the richest 20% of people use 86% of the world's natural resources; where most people spend more time shopping than they do with their families; where most of the products purchased become trash within a few years of their purchase; shopping without a conscience continues to create global and local environmental devastation and increasing income inequalities. Buy Nothing Day highlights alternatives that show that life doesn't have to be an empty search for the perfect product. The Puppet Parade will begin at the corner of Greenbrier Avenue and Highway 29 North at 1PM and proceed to the corner of Barracks Road and Emmett Street. The 2PM Puppet Show will be held in the ALC Copies Parking Lot across from Barracks Road Shopping Center. The Barter Faire, including music, clothes swap, seed exchange, book trade, art gift making table, and information from local organizations the Charlottesville Barter Network and the Charlottesville Center for Peace and Justice, will continue until 4:30PM. Everything is, of course, free. For more information contact Alex Davis at 434-293-4854 or Jennifer Conner
