Sunday's on the Tracks with George? Charlottesville, Virginia, September 11, 2003

What's up with the containers sitting on the tracks just off Preston Avenue across from the Shell Station?

Missing Weapons of Mass Destruction? - Joseph Cheek

Containers full of beer to help paint the town orange? - Blake Caravati

Nuclear missiles? - Virginia Germino

The containers behind Brown's cleaners confirm the Cold War is over. Old nuclear submarines are being recycled into natural gas storage units - Matthew Murray

Storage Tanks for Natural Gas - Harry Tenney

Virginia Germino was told by a very credible-looking guy in the Reid's parking lot that the containers are actually in the city yard, and are empty, but had previously held propane gas. She told him, I'd hoped at least for nuclear fuel, but he laughed and said no way, but we would be in the hottest place in the country if that were so (electronic mail, September 15, 2003).

According to Judy Mueller with Public Works, "The City installed the 5 propane storage tanks (60,000 gallons each) in the early 1970's. Propane was used to supplement the natural gas distribution system during peak winter demand times. The propane tanks are no longer needed due to the recent strengthening of the natural gas distribution system. The tanks were purchased and removed by a propane company in Pennsylvania. The tanks were removed from the city yard and placed on railroad cars ( welded down) for transport. They started their long journey 9/24/03!" (electronic mail, September 25, 2003)
