Thursday, January 1: New Year's Day Friday, January 2: Second Street First Fridays reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, January 5: The League of Women Voters of Charlottesville/Albemarle County hosts its annual Legislative Luncheon at 12:00 noon on Monday, January 5, 2004, at the Boars Head Ballroom. Local legislators, including Delegate Mitch Van Yahres and Delegate Rob Bell, will be on hand to give a preview of the upcoming legislative session and to answer questions. This popular event gives the public an opportunity to talk directly to state legislators and to learn what issues will be on the 2004 legislative agenda. Join us for a light lunch of soup, salad, dessert, and piquant questions from the audience, as well as prognostications of important issues for the upcoming General Assembly Session. All members of the community are invited. Cost of the luncheon, prepared by Boars Head, is $30 non-members, $25 members. Tuesday, January 6: The Junior League of Charlottesville is currently accepting applications for its Community Grants program, which awards grants of up to $1,000 to assist nonprofit community organizations in meeting immediate critical community needs. Applications can be obtained from the Junior Leagues website at www.avenue.org/jlc. Applications can also be requested by calling Erika Viccellio at (434) 984-5155. Deadline for applying is Friday, February 13. Wednesday, January 7: Last Charlottesville area Dean Meetup before Iowa. Go to www.Meetup.com - put in your zip code. In case you haven't heard, the Gordon Avenue Library is not available for Meetup this time. All Gordon Avenue folks are encouraged to go to "Southern Culture Restaurant" on Main Street. It is across the street from the Amtrak Train Station parking lot and down a bit toward the Downtown Mall. You can park along Main Street and in the train parking lot. The meeting will be upstairs. The Starr Hill Restaurant Meetup is just down the street. Attend either one. Both start at 7 PM.
Friday, January 9: UVa Legislative Forum The Office of State Governmental Relations will host a Legislative Forum featuring local legislators, Senator Creigh Deeds, Delegate Mitch Van Yahres, Delegate Rob B. Bell III, and Delegate R. Steven Landes, and President Casteen on Friday, January 9, 2003 at 12:00 noon in the Newcomb Hall Ballroom. Saturday, January 10: Route 29 - Hydraulic Road - 250 Bypass Open House Purpose: to look at alternative designs for transportation improvements. The MPO, City and County are inviting public feedback before they proceed with further technical work. Saturday, January 10th, 9am-1pm Monday, January 12: Miller Center Forum: Jon Meacham, managing editor of Newsweek Magazine, speaks 'Of Love and War: Roosevelt, Churchill and the Way We Live Now, from his new book. 11:00am, 2201 Old Ivy Road. Wednesday, January 14: Citizens of Virginia can now view the 2004 State Senate, available January 14th -- a live web cam will be available on a first come, first serve basis. For more information, contact the Senate of Virginia - Clerk's Office. Schools will get free access to the broadcasts. Non-school organizations such as lobbying firms can pay $450 for a subscription that guarantees them a dedicated line. The remaining video streams will be available for free on a first-come, first-served basis by logging on to http://sov.state.va.us/senate.htm. Thursday, January 15 - Saturday, January 17: Brown v. Board of Education 50th Anniversary Commission Meeting: Richmond, Virginia http://www.ed.gov/about/bdscomm/list/brownvboard50th/january2004.html The Brown v. Board of Education 50th Anniversary Commission will meet January 15-17, 2004, in Richmond, Virginia. The Commissioners representing Virginia, Dr. Benjamin W. Robertson, Sr. and Lacy B. Ward, Jr., and representing the Chief Justice of the United States, the Honorable Roger L. Gregory, are hosting the meeting. On January 15, at noon the Commission will meet at the Virginia General Assembly to have a photo opportunity with Governor Mark Warner and to hear resolutions from the floors of the Virginia House and Senate. The full Commission meeting will begin 2:00 pm in Senate Hearing Room A. The meeting is open to the public. At 6:00 p.m., the Commission will be honored at a reception at the Virginia State Library in Richmond. The Governor will attend this reception, along with Oliver Hill, plaintiffs counsel in the Davis et al v. School Board of Prince Edward County litigation. State legislators, members of the judiciary, local business leaders, civic and civil rights communities, students and educators will also be in attendance. On January 16, at 8:00 a.m., the Commission will travel to Farmville, Virginia, where Davis v. County School Board of Prince Edward County had its beginnings. Commission members will visit historic sites that were a part of the Davis litigation. The sites are the Robert Russa Moton Museum, Fuqua School, Prince Edward County High School, Prince Edward Courthouse, and the First Baptist Church. At each of these sites, the Commission will be given a presentation and tour. The Commission will have lunch at Longwood University. In the evening the Commission will attend a reception at the Robert Russa Moton Museum and participate in a discussion. On January 17, at 8:00 a.m., Dr. Benjamin W. Robertson, Sr. and his church will host a prayer breakfast. This meeting is optional for the Commission. The speakers for this prayer breakfast will be announced at a later date. Thursday, January 15: Sendoff for the Central Virginia Dean Team traveling to Iowa. Details to come. Thursday, January 15: Dr. Dean Health Care Express is comes to Charlottesville. Time 3:-4:30 Purpose: To hear from the public concerns about access to health care, rising costs of health insurance, and any problems related to health. They will listen and they will talk about Dr. Dean's proposals to address health issues from a national standpoint. All are invited to attend. Thursday, January 15: Anti-war demonstrations continue in Charlottesville in front of the Federal Building from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, January 15: MeetUp for Clark will take place at O'Neill's, which is located on the Corner at 6pm and it should last 30-45 minutes. The Clark campaign is now located at 600 E. Water St, Suite H. This is directly across from C&O Restaurant. The grand opening will take place at 12pm on Friday. Congressman LF Payne will be among others to take place in the celebration of the opening. Saturday, January 17: The Albemarle/Charlottesville Democratic breakfast on January 17, 2004 will feature representatives from campaigns of candidates for the Democratic nomination for president in 2004. It will be held at Jefferson Area Board for the Aging at 9:30 a.m. and the public is invited. Saturday, January 17: Ruth Ann (Reynolds) Walker has agreed to come to Charlottesville and conduct a seminar this Saturday morning, January 17th, on the process of selection of delegates to the Democratic National Convention. The seminar will be scheduled to occur just after the Democratic Breakfast at the Jefferson Area Board for the Aging (JABA). Expect the seminar to begin at about 11:30 a.m. Saturday, January 17: A commemorative Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration concert, sponsored by Mount Zion Baptist Church, will be held at 6 p.m. at First Baptist Church at 735 Park Street and will feature songs from the civil rights movement. Sunday, January 18: The Edgar Allan Poe Museum at 1914 East Main Street in Richmond, Virginia will be celebrating Edgar Allan Poe's 195th Birthday with an open house from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. At 2:30 Mary Alice Gunter will read from her new novel Murder in the Poe Room. Mrs. Gunter will also be discussing Poe's time at the University and the University's Raven Society. At 4:00 Poe's birthday cake will be served by Edgar's cousin Dr. Harry L.
