Dear George- I write in response to the Kilgore Endorses Charter Colleges article. It is extremely upsetting to me as a citizen, as a worker, as a taxpayer, a community member and as a union organizer and local union president that Mr. Kaine and Mr. Kilgore seem to endorse this bill before it has even been studied by the committee appointed to do so. Have they even read the bill? I understand this committee is to meet on October 12. Where or when we are not privy to. However, I believe this should be a PUBLIC meeting--not held in secret and behind closed doors. I think our ELECTED officials or ones that want to be elected ought to take a middle of the road UNBIASED stance on something as important as this issue until it has been studied thoroughly. But it seems to be a done deal. Just another example how the little guy gets trampled by the big guys and various and sundry politicians. With no thought or discussion with the workers that this will affect. Absolutely unbelievable. Where's the plan? When and where are the town meetings to be held? Will a University-wide email go out to employees informing them of the town meetings on the 13th and 21st? Or will the times and locations of these town meetings be buried somewhere in Inside UVA where no one will see them? So then UVA can say, when no one shows up, see, no one is worried about this. No one seems to be worried about this because no one KNOWS about it. UVa has been less than forthcoming, shall we say, about this issue. I just hope that these state leaders and legislators remember that this affects at least 50,000 voters. And that these state workers deserve to be treated honestly and fairly. I invite anyone that cares to speak up about this issue to our rally in Charlottesville on October 1st, where the little guys will speak up to the big guys to prevent our rights from totally being trampled. And I do extend an invitation to John Casteen and Leonard Sandridge to speak to employees. As I recall, Mr. Sandridge said last year the "employee input would be critical". So I invite their input on October 1st. Jan Cornell (electronic mail, September 8, 2004)
