It will be held in front of Cha Cha's on Friday, September 10, from 2-7 and Saturday, September 11, from 11-4. Free "Smart Women Vote" buttons and bumper stickers will be available.

Sunday, September 12: Democratic neighborhood canvassing, roughly 3 to 6 PM. We are targeting neighborhoods in Venable and JPA -- places we can't go on football game Saturdays. If seeing the news reports makes you mad enough to want to fight back, here's how! One group will be meeting at the Venable School parking lot behind the school (enter off
Gordon Avenue); another will be meeting at Nancy Damon's house at 2407 JPA (park on the street). We will provide the campaign materials that you will need and lists of names and addresses, and then give you a brief training before sending you out to do this vital work.

Tuesday, September 14: Come hear an all-star discussion about the impact of the youth vote in the 2004 election. Experts include Center for Politics director Larry Sabato and president of ROCK THE VOTE Jehmu Greene. Also register to vote and get your absentee ballot while you are there. This event is part of the Center for Politics’ National Symposium on Youth Civic Engagement.

Saturday, September 18: Charlottesville Albemarle Democratic Breakfast 9:30 am at JABA, 674 Hillsdale Drive (behind Fashion Square Mall). The speaker will be Kate Hanley. She's a former Chair of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, and was the whip of the Virgina Delegation at the Democratic National Convention in July. She'll talk about her experiences at the Convention, and about the prospects for Kerry/Edwards in Virginia this year.

Sunday, September 19: 10am-1pm, Serp Weekend: Telling Personal Stories: A Media Training Workshop, Jefferson Hall, UVa . Please join UVA Pride, Equality Virginia, and the LGBT Resource Center in training session teaching how to deal with reporters and media. Wednesday, September 22: Book-reading and Discussion at New Dominion Bookshop, 5:30 p.m. When the Rain Returns: Toward Justice and Reconciliation in Palestine and Israel. Co-written by Helena Cobban with 13 others, most of them also Quakers. "We all visited Israel and Palestine together in 2002 and then deliberated in a long and Quakerly way on what we had learned, and on the possibilities for nonviolent peace activism in Palestine/Israel. The book describes our visit, including our discussions with more than 90 Israelis and Palestinians, and presents the results of our later deliberations."

Copies of the book ($15) and light refreshments will be available at the event, which is being co-sponsored by New Dominion and the C'ville Center for Peace and Justice.

Thursday, September 23: 5:30 pm Caroline Kettlewell will be at New Dominion Bookshop for a talk and book-sigining.

When several utility companies challenged a group of elite high schools throughout the South to design and build a battery-operated electric car, a team of students from one of the poorest counties in North Carolina managed to enter the competition. In a true story that has been described as "Seabiscuit on wheels," Caroline Kettlewell recounts the adventure of starting from scratch with few resources, skills, or expectations and only 6 months to the final competition: a race driven by a NASCAR driver at the Richmond International Raceway.

Sunday, September 26: Reduce the Playing Field of 'American Candidates' Following the Sunday, September 26th episode of Showtime's "American Candidate, you can help reduce the playing field from 3 candidates to 2. [The three remaining candidates are Malia Lazu, Lisa Witter and Park Gillespie.]

Polls will be open for two hours following the episode and you will be able to vote via a toll free number or wireless text messaging.

Monday, September 27: City schools staff to present information on Flanagan Testing at four public gatherings.Parents and members of the community are invited to join Principals and Central Office staff at one of the meetings listed below to find out:

Who designed the tests and grading system?
What will these tests tell us about each student¹s academic strengths, needs and growth?
What kinds of tests are included and how are they used?
When will these tests be given?
Why are they being used?
How will these tests be used to teach?
How are the tests administered and scored?
How will the results of these tests be used to enhance instruction?

One week of free films, followed by moderated discussions and voter registration. Featuring Michael Moore's documentary "Fahrenheit 911". Michael Moore's documentary "Fahrenheit 911" will be shown every night at Mary Baldwin College in Carpenter Academic Building Rm. 207 at 6:30pm. One other film will also be shown every night in Carpenter Academic Building Rm. 210 at 6:30pm. "An Alternate Viewpoint" Film Festival is sponsored by MBC College Democrats and Staunton/Augusta area Democrats who wish to encourage everyone to be POLITICALLY ENGAGED THIS YEAR.

*Directions - Carpenter Academic Building is on Frederick Street in Staunton between the MBC Administration Building (on corner of New St. and Frederick St.) and the MBC Grafton Library. The Route 29 Bypass at Chalottesville is an issue.
