Tuesday, August 2: 6:30-8:30: Canvass Lake Monticello with Steve Koleszar. Info, Donna Goings, (434) 295-0441 donnago@cville.net

Wednesday, August 3: 7:00 pm. Democracy for America monthly meeting. New Albemarle County Office Building. Come at 6:30 for social and refreshments - bring something to share.

Friday, August 5: Staff the literature table at the Albemarle County fair.  The fair insists that tables be staffed at all times that the fair is open.  We need volunteers to help staff our shared table. The groups involved are:

Equality Virginia
Gaypride
Interfaith Gay Straight Alliance
Outyouth of the Blue Ridge
Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays Virginia Organizing Project

We would like volunteers to sign up for 2 or 3 hour shifts. Some free fair passes are available for volunteers who need them.

         Saturday   August 6     10 am - 11 pm
         Sunday     August 7     1 - 6 pm

Saturday, August 6: Ash Lawn Opera Summer Saturdays Series continues at 11 am with The Magic of Hans Christian Anderson - Applause Unlimited. Tickets at the door.Information info@ashlawnopera.org.

Saturday, August 6: Hiroshima Day Charlottesville Center for Peace and Justice Activities at Central Place on the Charlottesville Downtown Mall

3:00 - 8:00 pm CCPJ table and information boards, paper peace crane making, face painting for kids (and others), a "Listening Project", and a "Shadow Project" representing the "shadows" of those who were vaporized during the bombings.

8:00 - 9:00 pm Commemorative, candlelight vigil at Central Place.

As always, we appreciate your help on this day. We need people to take shifts at the CCPJ table and to help with the other activities as well.

Helena Cobban (434-971-1688) is coordinating volunteers for the publicity efforts and the other activities on the day. Sue Chase (540-456-8176) is coordinating the paper-crane folding and the vigil. Please contact one of us with offers of help! THANKS.

Wednesday, August 10: 1:30 until 3:00 p.m The Senior Statesmen of Virginia and the Senior Center, Inc. invite everyone to their FREE House of Delegates Candidates Showcase at the Senior Center, 1180 Pepsi Place. We also invite candidates for local offices to attend, stand up and be recognized by those in attendance. Potential supporters may come over at the end of the program to become better acquainted. Retiring Delegate MITCH VAN YAHRES will moderate the program. Speakers include: Republican Incumbent BEN CLINE and Democratic Challenger DAVID COX in the 24th House District; Republican Incumbent STEVE LANDES, unopposed in the 25th House District; PETER de FUR, Democratic Challenger for the 56th District; (Republican Incumbent Bill Janis was the only candidate who had a conflict and was unable to attend.); Republican Candidate TOM McCRYSTAL and Democratic Candidate DAVID TOSCANO, vying for the 57th House District seat being vacated by Mitch Van Yahres; Republican Incumbent ROB BELL and Democratic Challenger STEVE KOLESZAR in the 58th House District; and Independent Incumbent WATKINS ABBITT, JR., unopposed in the 59th District.

Friday, August 12: Second Friday Social: A New Tradition for Area Democrats. From 6 to 8 p.m. at Rapture Restaurant on the Downtown Mall in the back rooms. Hors d'oeuvres $5. Cash Bar.

Saturday, August 13: Ash Lawn Opera Summer Saturdays Series continues at 11 am with Trickster! - Barefoot Puppets. Tickets at the door. Information info@ashlawnopera.org.

Monday, August 15: 10:00 am. Town Hall Meeting at the Charlottesville Ice Park at the western end of the Downtown Mall. Lt. Governor Tim Kaine will be discussing the effect of budget reform on education with parents, teachers and concerned citizens. There will be an opportunity for the audience to give feedback and ask questions.

Wednesday, August 17: 7:30 pm Candlelight vigil in support of Cindy Sheehan (and other military and gold star families) Corner of Preston and McIntire (in front of Albemarle County office building), Bring candles, family, and friends.. Further information at MoveOn.org

Saturday, August 20: Reminder: No Albemarle Charlottesville Democratic Breakfast--Summer Recess.

Saturday, August 20: 10:00 am - 3:00 pm the Albemarle-Charlottesville Branch of the NAACP is hosting a Back to School Rally at Burley Middle School. The event is open to all area youth in grades K-12 (and their parents/guardians).

Saturday, August 27: Community Day at Westhaven. Lots of good activities all throughout the day. Kevin Lynch will be serving fried catfish sandwiches at noon and there will be lots of other good food also. Activities throughout the area all day from 8:00 to evening.

Saturday, August 27: The annual Albemarle County Democratic BBQ in Claudius Crozet Park at the foot of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. The fun will start at 5:00 pm with a cash bar and a silent auction under the tents. A hearty chicken and pork BBQ dinner will be served at 6:00.

The program will feature statewide and local candidates who are entering the final stretch of their campaigns and want to give their speeches all they've got. Tickets may be purchased from Democratic Committee Members or from Cheryl Oliver at Democratic Headquarters now at 300 West Main Street (the former Al Weed office) 295-1405. The tickets are $20 (a mere $15 per person in advance). Kids 12 and under are free. We ask that each willing family bring a dish for 12 to share:
