George We are writing to add to the many fond tributes to John Baker for his memorable contributions to our community. As a member of the Albemarle County School Board, John Baker demonstrated a deep commitment to leveling the playing field between students who enjoy every advantage and those who struggle with family poverty and lack of economic opportunity. John joined us and several others to create Computers4Kids, which began as a computer refurbishing and distribution program. Our first goal was to place a personal computer in the home of every city and county student whose family could not otherwise afford to own one. John Baker was there during the formative years of Computer4Kids, a valued adviser, member of the Board, and active participant. John did everything from unloading truckloads of computer equipment to persuading the School Board to give Computers4Kids its first financial contribution ever from the community. With John's sustained help, Computers4Kids expanded into today's successful model as a computer training, mentoring and distribution program. Its benefits have reached hundreds of students in both City and County schools and their families as well, with the tangible result that most of our graduates have enrolled in higher education or found quality jobs after High School. John understood that lack of access to technology only compounds the disadvantages that some students must overcome. We know that he would be exceedingly proud and inspired to see the many students, their parents and siblings who skillfully incorporate computers into their school work, jobs and personal lives because of his vision and tireless advocacy for Computers4Kids.
