We will be clearing an area of overgrown bushes and weeds adjacent to the Planned Parenthood Building. The security landscaping involves removing a lot of poison ivy vines which have been sprayed to kill them and radically reduce the opportunities for poison ivy, and we’re asking our volunteers to wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and gloves as an added precaution. Volunteers should bring lopping shears and pruning equipment of the hand-held variety—weed-whackers are not a good idea in this setting. We’ll work in teams of 3-4 to further minimize poison ivy risks, primarily cutting and pulling vines and other detritus from the area. There will also be opportunities to help which are not near the poison ivy. Snacks will be provided. Helen Plaisance will be supervising this activity. She can be contacted by e-mail at hjp4q@virginia.edu (work); hplaisance@earthlink.net (home), or by phone (before 10 pm) at 971-1555 for contact/questions/sign-up etc. Further details can be found at the JFK Club website: http://www.jfkclub.squarespace.com

Saturday, July 30: The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is accepting public comments through July 30, on the five-year operating permit renewal for the Moores Creek Sewage Treatment Plant, operated by the Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority (RWSA), near the confluence of Moores Creek and the Rivanna River in Charlottesville. A public hearing may be scheduled if the public demonstrates sufficient concern during the comment period which ends July 30.

RCS urges you to request DEQ to approve and schedule a public hearing to hear local concerns and to increase the scope of the permit to both halt and reduce nutrient pollution.

Talking points to include in your written message to DEQ:

  • Urge DEQ to hold a local public hearing concerning the Moores Creek Sewage Treatment Plant pollution permit in order to address the inclusion of nutrient pollution caps or reductions.
  • Currently and proposed unregulated and unlimited nutrient pollution from the Moores Creek plant knowingly feeds algal blooms which seriously impair aquatic environments and water quality in the James River. The draft permit makes no changes that will change this serious problem.
  • Intense concentrations and large volumes of nitrogen and phosphorus from Moores Creek Sewage Treatment Plant may also create negative impacts locally on Moores Creek and Rivanna River, particularly during low-water periods when treated wastewater makes up a considerable proportion of overall river flows. In addition, those sections of the Rivanna River and Moores Creek that are most impacted by RWSA pollutants are already included on the EPA's "dirty waters" list. The draft DEQ permit allows increased nutrient pollutant releases into these already "impaired" waters.
