Following is the inscription on the chalkboard, explaining its purpose and use

The Community Chalkboard and Podium: A Monument to the First Amendment

The monument is designed both to commemorate the First Amendment right of free speech and to provide visitors with a venue for the lawful exercise of that right.

Visitors are invited to express themselves with chalk on the chalkboard and vocally on the podium. Paint, posters, and fliers are not permitted anywhere on the monument.

Visitors are solely responsible for the content of their expression on the monument. Please respect the right of others to express themselves and remember that individuals of all ages may view what is written on the chalkboard.

All expression on the monument is temporary. The entire chalkboard is cleaned every Thursday. Visitors may clean all or part of the slate at anytime.

The chalk provided in the tray is for writing or drawing on the chalkboard only. Visitors are asked to return chalk to the tray when finished.

Please observe the following:

  • Only chalk may be used on the chalkboard, paint or any other substance is prohibited.
  • Attaching posters, fliers, or any other materials to the monument is prohibited.
  • Climbing on the monument is prohibited.
