George, President Casteen and the UVA administration continues their refusal to grant a living wage. Not only are the still starving their workers with poverty wages, but now they have begun starving the seventeen students sitting in Madison Hall to protest. At a 1:00 pm rally, the mother of one of the seventeen students led an effort by students and professors to deliver food and books to the students inside. Three police officers and one administrator blocked their path, declaring the building "closed" despite the steady stream of administrators and visitors allowed to enter at the administration's discretion. Casteen refuses to pay the University of Virginia students a living wage and now he has refused to let a mother feed her own daughter, just because she is excerising her first amendment rights to express her opinions. As the assembled group lay down the food at the base of the doorway into Madison Hall, one of the seventeen students inside held a sign that said "Come back at 4:45!" The fear from those inside the building is that President Casteen will attempt to arrest the students TONIGHT (Friday) at 5 PM, rather than deal with the public relations nightmare of leaving seventeen starving students locked inside Madison Hall for Easter Weekend. Please, come out and show your support for the seventeen students protesting poverty wages and facing arrest. There will be a vigil tonight at 4:45 PM at Madison Hall at the University of Virginia, across University Avenue from the Rotunda. It is vitally important that the students, faculty, and local residents show their support by attending this 4:45 PM vigil tonight. To tell Casteen how despicable his actions are, please e-mail him at casteen@virginia.edu or call him at (434) 924-3337 and come to the vigil tonight at Madison Hall. - Isaac Wood (electronic mail, 2:49 pm April 14, 2006 )
