The DMV decides that a gay man's own use of the term "poofter" is "socially, racially or ethnically offensive or disparaging" and demands his return of the license plate using this term. This, in a state that just added to its constitution an amendment clearly designed to stigmatize gays and deny them specific rights.

And they are worried about hurting somebody's feelings?
