Tuesday, November 6: Election Victory Parties: City Democrats will celebrate at the Downtown Mall Campaign Headquarters, 111 E. Main St., starting at 7 pm. County Democrats will celebrate at the Aberdeen Barn , 2018 Holiday Drive, starting at 7:30 pm.

Albemarle County Republican Committee Election Night Party will begin at 7 p.m. Delegate Bell will speak around 7:30 p.m. Rivals Sports Bar & Grill, 1525 East Rio Road, Charlottesville, Va.

Independent Peter Kleeman will be at Rapture on the Downtown Mall and welcomes all who wish to congregate.

Libertarian Arin Sime will hold an election-night party at Uncle Charlie’s Smokehouse (5793 The Square in Crozet) Start time: 7:30 pm.

Tuesday, November 6: 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm The Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement at the University of Virginia is pleased to announce a presentation by Dr. Sam Gaertner, Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Delaware, entitled “Racism Among the Well-Intentioned.” This event is free and open to the public, in the Newcomb Hall Theater at the University of Virginia.

Monday, November 12: 11:00 a.m. Forum: Why Are We Still Fighting Over Civil Rights? The Jena 6 and Other Problems of the Modern Era. Angela Ciccolo, interim general counsel of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, has recently worked in Jena, Louisiana, to safeguard the rights of several of the defendants in the case. Thursday, November 15: 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. The 214 Arts Center Presents Carnival in Cape Town: Photos by John Mason. Mason, who teaches African history and the history of photography, at the University of Virginia, uses his camera to get inside a little-known cultural phenomenon--a minstrel troupe from the mixed-race "Coloured" community in Cape Town, one of several dozen troupes which are the heart and soul of the Carnival.

Thursday, November 15: 7:30 p.m.The monthly meeting of Advocates for a Sustainable Albemarle Population (ASAP) Defining Our Community's 'Right Size' in the library of Westminster Presbyterian Church (190 Rugby Road).

Among the presenters: Rich Collins on the changing character of a community as a function of size; Jeff Werner on the fiscal costs of growth; Tom Olivier on the threats to ecosystem services as population grows; Dudley Rochester on air quality and population size; Mike Collins on environmental footprint analysis; Jack Marshall will serve as moderator. We invite both supporters and skeptics to participate in a critical discussion of this ground-breaking study, for which both the city and county have set aside (but not yet released) partial funding.

Friday, November 16: 11:00 a.m. The Myth of the Rational Voter: Why Democracies Choose Bad Policies. Bryan D. Caplan, associate professor of economics at George Mason University, argues that "voters are worse than ignorant; they are, in a word, irrational—and vote accordingly." New York Times columnist Nicholas D. Kristof called his study "the best political book this year," and says it does "a remarkably thorough job of insulting the American voter." Friday, November 16: 6:00 pm. The Rivanna Solid Waste Authority will hold a meeting tonight and one on Dec. 4 to get residents' views on recycling in Charlottesville and the county. In City Council Chambers at 605 E. Market St.

Friday, November 16: 6:00 to 8:00 p.m The Virginia Organizing Project fourth annual Social Justice Bowl at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 190 Rugby Road, Charlottesville.

Please join us for a soup and bread supper. Then take your bowl, donated by a local potter, home. More information about ticket sales later, but each ticket will cost $25.

The Social Justice Bowl is a community building event as well as a fundraiser, but many who would like to attend cannot afford the $25. Please consider becoming a SPONSOR by donating an extra $25 - $200, so one to eight others can attend the Social Justice Bowl.

Saturday, November 17: 9:30 am. Regular monthly Albemarle / Charlottesville Democratic Breakfast, at JABA (adjacent to the Marriott Suites and behind Fashion Square). This month's program is a discussion of the recent local elections: issues, strategies and outcomes. The panel includes Will Goldsmith, political writer for C-Ville Weekly, Coy Barefoot of WINA and Sean Tubbs with Charlottesville Tomorrow.

A light breakfast is offered, the event is free, and the public is warmly invited.

Saturday, November 17: 7:00 pm John McCutcheon in his farewell concert to Charlottesville at the Martin Luther King Jr. Performing Arts Center . There will be a post-concert reception where McCutcheon will meet and talk with concert goers over delicious hors d'oeurves.

Sunday, November 18: 7:00 pm UVA Law School Asst Prof. Deena Hurwitz presents a free lecture/discussion “Whose Rights? The Global Role of International Human Rights Today.” Thomas Jefferson Memorial Church, Unitarian-Universalist, 717 Rugby Rd.

Prof. Hurwitz directs the Law School’s Human Rights Program and the International Human Rights Law Clinic. Over the past few years she has worked in Afghanistan and Lebanon on clinical legal education and in Suriname on the rights of indigenous peoples.

Public parking is available in church parking lots.

Saturday, November 24: 9:30 a.m. The Full Beaver Moon. Time to set beaver traps before the swamps freeze to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Another interpretation suggests that the name Beaver Full Moon comes from the fact that the beavers are now active in their preparation for winter. Also called the Frosty Moon.
