In the coming years, the region's elderly population alone is expected to explode: The Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission (TJPDC) projects the number of people aged 60 and over will have increased 109% from 2003 to 2025. How is Charlottesville prepared to cope with the influx? Joining us to discuss this and related challenges will be two disability rights advocates, Nate Brown and Jim Herndon. Mr. Brown is a peer advocate and a representative for Charlottesville's Independence Resource Center. Mr. Herndon is a professional neighborhood planner for the City of Charlottesville.

Tuesday, September 16: 6:00 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Calvin Butts, senior pastor of the nationally renowned Abyssinian Baptist Church of New York City, and President of SUNY College at Old Westbury, will speak on the topic “Integrity and Leadership.” The talk will be held in the Art Gallery in Newcomb Hall at the University of Virginia. Thursday, September 18: 7:30 p.m. “Regional Job Growth: Plans, Benefits, and Costs,” a presentation by Michael Harvey, Executive Director of the Thomas Jefferson Partnership for Economic Development, at the monthly meeting of Advocates for a Sustainable Albemarle Population. The talk, followed by questions and discussion by an ASAP panel and the audience, will build on TJPED’s five-year comprehensive plan for economic development in Charlottesville, Albemarle, and surrounding counties. Friday, September 19: 11:00 a.m. Miller Center Forum: Drawing the Line at the Big Ditch: The Panama Canal Treaties and the rise of the Right. Adam Clymer served as the New York Times' National Political Correspondent, Polling Editor, Political Editor, Weekend Senior Editor, Chief Congressional Correspondent, Washington Editor, and Washington Correspondent before retiring in 2003. Saturday, September 20: 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. Regular monthly Albemarle/Charlottesville Democratic Breakfast. Global Warming The Coming Flood. Al Weed of Public Policy Virginia will focus on how concerned citizens can use the impact of climate change on Virginia to press the need for immediate action. They will be given the tools, ideas and supporting materials to change public policy at the local level.

Public Policy Virginia believes it is important for people to become engaged locally in order to change the way government and political leaders deal with global warming. Attendees will also learn about the international aspects of climate change and its bearing on third world countries, as well as the role of the US. There will be a discussion of energy, fuels and national issues, with Q&A encouraged.

At JABA, 674 Hillsdale Drive, adjacent to the Marriott Suites and east of Fashion Square. The event is free, a light breakfast is offered, and the public is warmly invited.

Friday, September 26: 5:45 p.m. Silent Auction, 7:30 Dinner The Freedom Fund Banquet of the Albemarle/Charlottesville NAACP The guest speaker will be Mr. A. Hugo Bowers of Bowers Family Enterprises, Richmond, Virginia. Honorees for the evening will be Paul M. Gaston, Professor Emeritus, University of Virginia; and the Johnson Brothers, legendary civil rights leaders and community activists; Reverend Doctor Reginald A. Johnson, Minister of Pilgrim Baptist Church and Reverend William S. Johnson, Associate Minister, Pilgrim Baptist Church.

The Freedom Fund Banquet is the major fund raising event for the Branch and funds raised by the Banquet permit the Branch to offer academic scholarships to area youth, offer workshops and activities for youth and adult members as well as the larger community, and provide operating monies for the organization. Monday, September 29: 11:00 a.m. Miller Center Forum: Breathing the Fire. Since 2003, CBS News Correspondent Kimberly Dozier has worked primarily in Baghdad, and has covered Iraq and the Middle East extensively for "The CBS Evening News," "The Early Show," and "CBS Radio News." On Memorial Day 2006, while reporting a story in Baghdad, she was seriously wounded in a car bombing but recovered completely after multiple surgeries and months of physiotherapy.
