George, I say AMEN to Harry Tenney! In an era where the experts predict the end of cheap oil (and thus asphalt for paving many roads); when less expensive, sustainable, renewable fuels should be the goal; when the internal-combustion automobile engine will be exhibited in museums; why do we see the only solution is to build more highways and parking lots. The population of the U.S. is predicted to exceed 400 million by mid-century. Do we want to guarantee that every new family has one or more cars and new roads for them to drive on? When planners plan for 40-50 years into the future, why can't they see outside the box of the past? Glenn Short (Electronic mail, June 29, 2009)
