Hands Across the Park demonstration
Tracing the planned route with police-line tape, demonstrators protested
building the Meadowcreek Parkway through McIntire Park. Daniel Bluestone,
who teaches American architecture and urbanism at the UVa School of Architecture,
is a long-time foe of the road and an organizer of the event. He was joined
on Sunday afternoon by an estimated 300 people, including former Mayors
Maurice Cox and Francis Fife, and former City Council member Kevin Lynch.
Long time resident and activist Jane Foster commented that the idea
of a parkway running through the McIntire Park makes her sick. "Ive
hated it from the very beginning. I think it's a wicked wicked thing to
do to Mr. McIntire's beautiful park." She explains, "The County
was supposed to build roads to improve things, but they only want to build
this road right through the city--creating more traffic for us and using
up the park." (Dave Sagarin, September 28, 2009)
