George, It is hard to trust a poll (Public Policy Polling) that says Fox News is the most trusted of all TV news broadcasters. So I looked up this poll. First of all, this is the kind of poll in which respondents are interviewed by a computer giving answers by pressing phone dial numbers. What kind of person stays on the line to talk to a computer? This cannot be an unbiased, representative sample. Respondents were asked separately about each of five TV news networks: Do you trust ABC News? Do you trust NBC News? Do you trust CNN? Do you trust Fox News? Do you trust CBS News? Only about 20% of the answers to each question were Not Sure. Thus, most respondents gave opinions about all five networks. The remote controls that these people use must be worn out. Almost every night they must surf among all five news networks. How else could they know the trustworthiness of all five? For your information, a Wall Street Journal survey taken a few days ago found the following. Respondents were asked which one of the following television news sources they got most of their information about politics and current events from. Results were:
Public Policy Polling found that 49% of their sample trusted Fox News (making it the most trusted). Yet, according to the WSJ survey, only 23% get most of their information from Fox News. One has to wonder how often the 49% who trust Fox News actually watch it and why many more dont watch it if it is the most trustworthy? David RePass (Electronic mail, January 28, 2010)
