Stephen
Colbert appeared before a House Judiciary subcommittee last Friday http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDOZPvNlsXk
to give testimony in hearings on undocumented farm laborers. He had participated
in the "take my job" program, spending a day actually out in a
field, and sees himself as an advocate for the voiceless. On television,
however, Colbert portrays a blustering conservative, and he remained in
character through most of his five plus minutes. This caused confusion and
some dismay--majority leader Steny Hoyer later characterized the testimony
as "inappropriate" and "an embarrassment," but Speaker
Pelosi said "He's an American. He comes before the committee. He has
a point of view. It can bring attention to an important issue like immigration.
I think it's great."
