Patrick Lang, a retired senior officer of the U.S. Military Intelligence and U.S. Army Special Forces, trained as a Middle East specialist and served there for many years. He was the first professor of Arabic at the United States Military Academy at West Point, and served as the Defense Intelligence Officer for the Middle East, South Asia, and Terrorism. Colonel Lang is also an analyst for many television news broadcasts.. A former senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, he is the Edward R. Stettinius Professor of Politics at the University of Virginia where he teaches courses on the Middle East and American foreign policy. He is the author of numerous books and articles, including Peace Process: American Diplomacy and the Arab-Israeli Conflict Since 1967 (Brookings, 2005, third edition). Harris, formerly of The Washington Post, is the author of a book on Bill Clinton The Survivor, and the co-author with Mark Halpern of The Way to Win: Clinton, Bush, Rove and How to Take the White House in 2008. Mike Allen is the chief political correspondent for Politico. Prior to that he was Time Magazines White House correspondent and spent six years at The Washington Post, where he covered President Bush's first term, Capitol Hill, campaign finance, and the Bush, Gore and Bradley campaigns of 2000. Her most recent book is The Means of Reproduction: Sex, Power and the Future of the World" and won last years J. Anthony Lukas Work in Progress Award. Researched in four continents, The Means of Reproduction tells the story of the global battle for reproductive rights, and argues that the oppression of women is the great human rights issue of our time. The variety of English spoken by many African American studentsand more importantly, the negative responses of teachers and administrators to itis a critical factor in the persistent Black/White achievement gap in American education. This talk discusses the challenges facing speakers of African American Vernacular English in schools and the more promising approaches that have been proposed to overcome them.
